1920s WHITNEY Die Cut VALENTINE CARD Custom Framed

AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > Large 1920s Whitney Valentine card custom framed under glass, measuring 9.25" × 11.25" overall. The elaborate cardstock composition centers upon a heart-shaped garden vignette of a young boy and girl seated together in a hammock, accompanied by a small dog and backed by a picket fence, flowering branches and trees. Large sprays of orange, lavender and pale blue pansies frame the scene above and below. Layered heart motifs, scalloped blue edging, floral cutwork and lace-like printed borders create the ornate appearance associated with early 20th-century die-cut Valentines. The combination of sentimental childhood imagery, flowers, hearts and decorative paper-lace design is characteristic of Whitney production from the 1920s. The George C. Whitney Company of Worcester, Massachusetts, became one of America’s leading Valentine manufacturers after acquiring Esther Howland’s New England Valentine Company during the late 19th century. Whitney became especially known for colorful printing, embossed and die-cut cardstock, layered ornament and romantic scenes featuring children, flowers and animals. The Valentine is presented within a gold-tone molded frame with a beaded inner border and stepped profile. A label on the reverse reads THE SNOOP SHOP ~ CUSTOM FRAMING ~ CENTREVILLE, MS., dated 10/86, documenting the present framing in October 1986.
