NO SHIPPING ~ LOCAL PICKUP ONLY > Despite the condition issues noted below, this pair of heavy and substantial solid wood Windsor style captain’s armchairs offers considerable potential for improvement. They are called Windsor chairs because they belong to the English chairmaking tradition known by that name, distinguished by turned legs and back spindles socketed directly into a thick solid-wood seat. The name was in use by the early 1700s and is generally associated with chairs transported and marketed through Windsor, England. This low-backed armchair version became known as a captain’s chair because the broad, curved back and continuous arms form a compact, supportive seat resembling the traditional chair provided for a ship’s captain or other person in authority. Thus, these are Windsor chairs by construction and captain’s chairs by their particular low, wraparound armchair form Each chair features a shaped plank seat, low spindle back, broad curved arm rail, turned supports and legs, and box-form stretchers. Painted in an off-white finish, these sturdy chairs offer classic country, cottagecore, farmhouse and upcycling appeal. The low backs and continuous arm arrangement are characteristic of the captain’s-chair variation of the Windsor form. Both chairs remain sturdy and serviceable; one lower stretcher is broken, with the damage shown in the accompanying close-up photograph. Well suited for restoration, repainting, refinishing, creative upcycling, or continued use with the existing timeworn surface. CONDITION REPORT > Heavy overall paint wear with chips, losses, scuffs, scratches, stains and other surface-condition elements throughout. One chair has a broken lower stretcher. Offered as shown.
