AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > A vintage J.C. Higgins pocket hand warmer sold through Sears, Roebuck and Co., featuring a polished chrome-plated metal body with ventilated upper cover, removable fuel reservoir and the J.C. HIGGINS script mark to the front. Lot includes the original dark blue velvet drawstring pouch, fitted metal filling cup, instruction sheet and green retail box marked POCKET HAND WARMER, SOLD ONLY BY SEARS, ROEBUCK AND CO. AND SIMPSONS - SEARS LTD., MADE IN JAPAN and CATALOG NO. 3810. The instruction sheet identifies the warmer as a model with a NEW IMPROVED BURNER and explains that pure gasoline, benzine or lighter fluid could be added to the internal reservoir. Fuel vapor was absorbed by the burner element, which was ignited and then allowed to radiate steady heat until the fuel was exhausted. Sears promoted the warmer for outdoor spectators, skiers, skaters, hunters, golfers, fishermen, policemen, firemen, mailmen, farmers, truck drivers, lumberjacks, loggers, seamen and pilots. J.C. Higgins was a Sears sporting-goods brand used across a wide range of hunting, fishing, camping and outdoor equipment during the mid-20th century. Documented examples of this Japanese-made Catalog No. 3810 hand warmer are commonly identified as 1950s production, placing the set within the postwar period when compact catalytic warmers were widely marketed for winter sports, field work and cold-weather travel. The combination of the chrome warmer, branded pouch, filling cup, original instructions and dealer box gives this example strong appeal as vintage Sears advertising, J.C. Higgins sporting goods, mid-century outdoor equipment, Japanese export metalware and cold-weather camping memorabilia.
