AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > Measuring 4.75 x 3.75 overall, standing approximately 1/2 inch tall and weighing a remarkable full pound, a substantial 1948 Virginia Metalcrafters solid cast-brass VIOLET leaf dish, Pattern No. 3-26. The deeply modeled concave surface reproduces the irregular form, prominent veins and natural texture of a violet leaf, with the raised stem forming a central handle-like accent. Two integral cast feet to the underside elevate and stabilize the compact dish. The underside is marked VIOLET, COPYRIGHT 1948, 3-26 and carries the crowned VM emblem of Virginia Metalcrafters. The design belongs to the celebrated botanical series created by Norwegian-born American sculptor Oskar J. W. Hansen, who began designing naturalistic brass leaf trays for Virginia Metalcrafters in 1948. Hansen was also known for monumental Art Deco sculpture, including work associated with Hoover Dam, while the smaller Virginia Metalcrafters leaf forms translated botanical specimens into richly textured functional sculpture. Matching examples identify VIOLET as design 3-26. Virginia Metalcrafters became known for finely cast American brass decorative accessories, reproductions and historically inspired household metalware. The unusually heavy casting and detailed surface make this small example suitable as a ring dish, jewelry tray, coin catchall, vide-poche or botanical display, with strong appeal to collectors of Virginia Metalcrafters, Oskar Hansen designs, mid-century brass, American metalwork and naturalistic leaf forms.
