AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > Measuring 13.75 inches in diameter, standing approximately 2 inches tall and weighing close to 3 pounds, a substantial antique hand-carved wooden bowl with a broad shallow interior, thick irregular rim and rounded exterior. Visible adze, gouge and scraping marks remain throughout the interior and underside, clearly recording the traditional hand-working methods used to shape the bowl from a single section of wood. The low, wide form is more accurately described as a shallow trencher, chopping or general-purpose household bowl rather than a deep dough bowl. Displayed as discovered with an assortment of dried botanical materials placed by the prior owner as decor. Bowls of this nature were practical household implements used for preparing, mixing, serving or holding food and other domestic materials. Before machine-turned woodenware became widely available, many were carved locally by hand from readily available hardwoods. The surviving tool marks, uneven contours and substantial weight reflect individual workmanship rather than standardized factory production. The bowl shows extensive evidence of long household use, including surface staining, wear and a slight age-related separation along the grain. The restrained form and heavily worked surface give this example strong appeal as primitive woodenware, early American kitchen cook ware, farmhouse décor, folk craft and antique domestic history.
