Antique LONGWY FRENCH BLUE & WHITE DIVIDED PLATE

AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > Measuring 10 inches in diameter, an antique French Longwy earthenware serving plate with a slightly depressed center, broad flange border and an unusual arrangement of uneven raised divisions extending across the surface. The distinctive form appears intended to separate foods or provide specialized serving areas, though the exact original purpose has not been established. The decoration features a finely rendered bird perched upon a flowering branch, accompanied by a butterfly and additional sprays of blossoms, all rendered in deep blue against an ivory-white ground. A delicate repeating loop border follows the circular edge. The underside carries an impressed circular LONGWY mark with the designation B 1.86, indicating January 1886 production. The letter B likely represents an internal factory, body or production designation rather than a pattern name. The plate’s divided construction does not correspond with the conventional elongated form associated with asparagus servers and is best described as an unusually configured serving plate. The Faïencerie de Longwy was founded in Longwy, France, in 1798 and became known for artistic earthenware influenced by Asian, Orientalist and later Art Deco design. During the late 19th century, the factory produced blue-and-white tableware decorated with birds, blossoms, butterflies and other nature motifs reflecting the period fascination with Japanese and East Asian art. The uncommon divided form, dated Longwy factory mark and finely detailed bird-and-blossom decoration give this example appeal as antique French faience, Japonisme tableware, blue-and-white ceramics, Victorian serving ware and late 19th-century European decorative art.
