AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > Measuring 9.5 inches in diameter and approximately 1 inch deep, a heavy Chinese blue-and-white glazed stoneware plate with a pale celadon-toned ground, scalloped edge and broad raised flange divided by pierced lattice panels. The central reserve depicts a fish swimming among stylized aquatic foliage and fruiting branches, surrounded by spiral, leaf and geometric borders. Additional oval reserves around the flange feature monkeys among flowering vines, creating an unusual combination of animal, botanical and reticulated decoration. The blue four-character seal mark to the underside reads ????, QIANLONG NIAN ZHI, translating as MADE DURING THE QIANLONG REIGN. The Qianlong Emperor ruled from 1736 to 1795; however, marks of this nature were frequently applied to later Chinese ceramics in tribute to earlier imperial porcelain and do not independently establish 18th-century manufacture. The pierced or reticulated border required openings to be cut through the porcelain body before glazing and firing, giving the plate a lace-like architectural quality. The combination of cobalt-blue decoration, celadon-toned porcelain, fish imagery, monkeys and openwork construction gives this example appeal as Chinese decorative porcelain, Asian ceramic art, blue-and-white tableware, reticulated porcelain and animal-motif décor.
