AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > Standing 9 inches tall on a 3-5/8 x 2.25 base, a vintage Sarsaparilla Deco Designs ceramic pink flamingo bird ceramic figurine modeled with a tall curved neck, pink body, black-tipped beak, molded plumage and elongated legs rising through sculpted teal-blue tropical leaves and reeds. The underside retains the original shield-shaped label reading SARSAPARILLA DECO DESIGNS N.Y.C., N.Y. JAPAN. Sarsaparilla Deco Designs was a New York company founded by Les Sackin in 1976. The firm became known for reviving Art Deco imagery through decorative lamps, figurines, ceramics, clocks, ashtrays and novelty accessories. A major part of the business involved leasing or reusing original period molds and designs, particularly forms associated with Frankart and other 1920s–1930s decorative manufacturers. The company’s strongest period ran from the late 1970s through the mid-1990s. Production was not limited to one material or one country. Sarsaparilla marketed cast-metal lamps and architectural accessories made in the United States, while many smaller ceramic and novelty items were manufactured in Japan for the American market. The label on this flamingo specifically reads SARSAPARILLA DECO DESIGNS N.Y.C., N.Y. JAPAN, identifying Sarsaparilla as the New York design and marketing firm and Japan as the country of manufacture. In 1997, the company was acquired by Appletree, Inc. The vivid pink, teal and black palette gives this example strong appeal as vintage flamingo décor, tropical kitsch, Florida-style decoration, 1980s ceramics and Japanese-made decorative art.
