AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > A vintage Lane miniature cedar chest or keepsake box presented by Weatherby Furniture Co. of Mobile, Alabama, crafted in aromatic red cedar with a hinged lid, rounded corners, fitted metal hardware and a circular key escutcheon to the front. The interior lid carries the branded inscription LANE CEDAR CHESTS ALTAVISTA, VA. PRESENTED BY WEATHERBY FURNITURE CO. MOBILE, ALA., while the underside retains the original Lane paper label describing the miniature construction and promoting the superior features of full-size Lane cedar chests. Lane developed these miniature cedar boxes as promotional versions of the company’s full-size hope chests. Distributed through local furniture dealers, the boxes became closely associated with Lane’s Girl Graduate Plan, an extensive advertising program that presented miniature chests to young women approaching high-school graduation. The promotion introduced future homemakers to the Lane name and became one of the company’s most successful marketing campaigns, with millions of miniature chests distributed nationwide over several decades. Founded in Altavista, Virginia, Lane became one of America’s best-known manufacturers of cedar chests, promoting aromatic cedar construction, tight-fitting joints and protection for clothing, linens and keepsakes. This dealer-marked example also preserves a direct connection to Weatherby Furniture Co. of Mobile, giving the box added interest as Alabama advertising, Mobile business memorabilia, Lane Furniture history, a miniature hope chest and a vintage promotional keepsake.
