Title: Black and Gray Poured Abstraction on Cream Ground Technique: Oil on masonite Measures: 23 x 31 inches (58.4 x 78.7 cm) Year: Undated (inscribed "51" at lower left; unverified) Condition: Appears in generally good visual condition based on the photographs supplied, with crisp black and gray paint layers and raised, glossy skeins and droplets across the surface. A fine, regular texture is visible through the cream ground. No significant paint losses or cracks are apparent in the available images. Minor surface irregularities, light handling marks, and age-related wear may be present. Presented in a black frame, showing minor surface wear. Not examined out of the frame. Condition is described from the photographs supplied. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition description. Provenance: Private Colelction Visual Description: A horizontal, all-over abstraction in which a dense web of black and soft dove-gray lines spreads across a warm cream ground from edge to edge, with no single focal point or traditional foreground and background. The black paint ranges from hair-thin filaments to thick, pooled ribbons and heavy blots, curving in long arcs, sharp hooks, and looping trajectories that cross and recross one another. Interwoven with them, lighter gray skeins and broad splashes add a second, quieter layer, softening the contrast and creating a sense of depth within the tangle. Small round droplets and spatters are scattered throughout, punctuating the lines with rhythmic accents. In places the black marks gather into denser clusters, notably across the upper center and left, while elsewhere the cream ground opens up between more widely spaced strands, producing a pulse of tension and release across the surface. The pared-down palette of black, gray, and cream keeps attention on line, gesture, and rhythm. The all-over composition, the poured and dripped application, and the emphasis on the physical act of painting reflect the visual language of Abstract Expressionism and its gestural, action-based tendencies. The lower left bears a painted inscription reading "Jackson Pollock 51." This composition reflects stylistic elements commonly associated with major figures in modern and contemporary art.
