Title: Nocturnal Sea Figure with Shells and Luminous Moons in Blue Technique: Gouache on paper Measures: 11 x 8 inches (27.9 x 20.3 cm) Year: Undated Condition: Appears in generally good visual condition based on the photographs supplied, with intense, saturated coloration and lively, layered brushwork, including fine dotted and linear detailing in white, pink, and yellow. No significant losses, tears, or creases are apparent in the available images. Minor surface irregularities, light handling marks, and age-related wear may be present. Presented in a brushed bronze-toned frame, showing minor surface wear. Not examined out of the frame. Condition is described from the photographs supplied. Provenance: Private Colelction Visual Description: A dreamlike nocturnal scene steeped in deep ultramarine, cobalt, and indigo, in which a female figure emerges from swirling currents and drifting strands of color. Her head is tipped back toward the upper left, her face in profile turned upward, with long pale hair streaming behind her in fine white, green, and turquoise lines adorned with tiny shells, a starfish, and dotted ornaments. A pink and yellow seashell is held to her lips, and her slender body arches through the center of the composition in bands of turquoise, lime, violet, and magenta. Above her, a pale moon ringed in aqua and white glows at the upper left, while a second, smaller yellow orb encircled by green and pink dots hovers beside her raised hand. To the left, sharp, blade-like forms in emerald, cobalt, and black cut diagonally across the sheet, some crossed with fine grid-like lines, while on the right long vertical ribbons of aqua, pink, and lilac, studded with white dots, fall like seaweed or streams of light. The interplay of the floating figure, the twin celestial bodies, and the fluid, underwater atmosphere evokes the dream imagery of Surrealism, rendered here with an expressive, almost luminous palette.
