Title: Snow-Covered Village at Sunset with Smoking Chimneys Technique: Watercolor on paper Measures: 10 x 14 inches (25.4 x 35.6 cm) Year: Undated Condition: Appears in generally good visual condition based on the photographs supplied, with warm, well-preserved coloration and a densely worked, textured surface of short, raised strokes. No significant losses, tears, or creases are apparent in the available images. Minor surface irregularities, light handling marks, and age-related wear may be present. Presented in an ornate gilt frame with deeply molded scrolling acanthus ornament, a darkened patina in the recesses, and a beaded inner molding, showing minor surface wear. Not examined out of the frame. Condition is described from the photographs supplied. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition description. Provenance: Gifted privately from the private collection of the Yamamoto family in Kyoto to a nephew in Kobe. Visual Description: A wintry village scene in horizontal format, viewed across a snow-covered field toward a cluster of houses beneath a glowing late-day sky. The buildings, with ochre and golden-yellow facades, rows of small dark windows, and roofs dusted with white snow, step across the middle ground from left to right, their slate-gray and blue-gray gables catching cool shadow. Plumes of blue smoke curl upward from several chimneys into a sky streaked with apricot, salmon, rust, cream, and pale blue, suggesting the warm light of sunset against the cold air. At left, a stand of bare trees with dark, slender trunks and branches still holding russet and amber leaves frames the composition. In the middle distance, two small dark figures stand on the snow near a frozen pond, and a lone tree rises beside a curving reddish-brown path that leads toward the houses. The foreground is a broad expanse of snow rendered in white, powder blue, and lavender, interrupted by tufts of dry grass and reeds in sienna and umber. The whole surface is built from short, dabbed strokes that break color into vibrating touches. The focus on changing light, seasonal atmosphere, and broken color reflects the visual language of Impressionist winter landscape painting. This composition reflects stylistic elements commonly associated with major figures in modern and contemporary art.
