AVAILABLE FOR SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > A signed studio pottery pitcher by Susan Brown Freeman of Birmingham, Alabama, standing 4.5" tall and measuring 4" in diameter across the base. The pitcher is substantial and highly decorative for the compact size, with a broad cylindrical lower body rising to a narrowed waist and flared, hand-shaped mouth. The rim is deliberately manipulated into an undulating form that creates a pronounced pouring spout, while the large rounded handle is pulled high from the shoulder and finished in the same deep blue glaze as the upper body. The lower half is especially distinctive, featuring a broad band of deeply carved botanical decoration worked into the pale speckled stoneware body. Repeating leaves and sweeping curved forms create a rhythmic pattern around the vessel, with portions of the carving selectively filled in blue. Narrow horizontal bands frame the carved section above and below, further emphasizing the contrast between the cream clay and saturated glaze. The upper body, neck, interior and handle are covered in a rich mottled cobalt and slate blue glaze, with darker breaking along the rim and edges and lighter blue pooling throughout. The natural variation of the glaze gives the surface considerable depth. The underside is left unglazed and is hand signed Susan, matching documented examples attributed to Susan Brown Freeman, a Birmingham, Alabama studio potter whose work is known for carved stoneware vessels combining bold blue glazes with exposed cream-colored clay and stylized botanical designs. This example is a particularly attractive combination of functional pitcher form, carved decoration and sculptural rim treatment, making it equally appealing as usable studio pottery or decorative Southern craft.
