Douglas Downs (American, b. 1946). Grizzly Morning. Patinated bronze sculpture, numbered 2/25 a very limited edition. 16.75 H x 10 W x 18.5 D in. A dramatic and highly detailed bronze sculpture by acclaimed Western and wildlife artist Douglas Downs, titled Grizzly Morning. The composition captures a tense frontier encounter as a mounted mountain man, rifle raised, urges his rearing horse forward while a protective grizzly sow rises behind, accompanied by her cubs. Executed with exceptional attention to anatomical detail and narrative realism, the sculpture conveys both movement and suspense, hallmarks of Downs celebrated depictions of the American West. The bronze features a rich dark patina and is mounted on a shaped hardwood presentation base. Notable details include expressive facial modeling, finely textured fur and fringe work, realistic equine anatomy, and hidden wildlife elements incorporated into the naturalistic terrain. Signed in the bronze Douglas Downs 1998 and numbered 2/25. Condition Report: Overall very good condition with an attractive, even patina. Minor surface wear, light handling marks, and scattered areas of oxidation consistent with age and display. The reins appear slightly bent or displaced in areas, and there is a minor bend to a thin projecting wire element near the horse's head. Hardwood base displays light wear commensurate with use.
