After Dumont (French, 19th Century), Milo of Crotona, Bronze Cast by H. Luppens, 1870. Age: Dated 1870; late 19th century cast after the celebrated model by Dumont depicting the ancient Greek athlete Milo of Crotona. Dimensions: 16 H x 7.5 W x 7.5 D inches. A finely modeled bronze sculpture depicting the legendary Greek wrestler and Olympian Milo of Crotona in the dramatic moment of his demise. Based upon the celebrated composition by Dumont, the figure is shown straining against a split tree trunk, a reference to the classical tale in which Milo became trapped while attempting to tear apart a tree and was subsequently attacked by wild animals. The sculpture displays strong academic modeling, with carefully articulated musculature, expressive facial features, and flowing drapery integrated into the naturalistic tree-form support. Incised signature reading H. Luppens and is dated 1870 on the base. The work exhibits the hallmarks of late nineteenth-century European academic sculpture, combining classical subject matter with naturalistic execution. The dark brown to black patina accentuates the sculptural details and lends the work considerable visual presence despite its cabinet-scale dimensions. Condition: Overall good condition consistent with age and handling. Surface wear, scattered abrasions, minor rubbing to the patina, and losses to the darkened finish along portions of the base edges. The underside shows oxidation and verdigris commensurate with age. No major structural damage observed. This auction house considers the photographs to be the condition report. Provenance: From the estate of a distinguished Georgia physician, whose collection of fine art, antiques, jewelry, and decorative objects was carefully assembled over a period of decades.
