American School, after 19th Century Historical Models titled Sheridan’s Ride – Equestrian Bronze of General Philip H. Sheridan. Patinated bronze on black marble plinth. 23H x 18W x 8D inches. A finely modeled patinated bronze equestrian sculpture depicting General Philip H. Sheridan, inspired by the famed Civil War episode immortalized as “Sheridan’s Ride. The composition captures the Union general in a moment of triumphant command, mounted on a spirited horse and raising his arm in salute or rallying gesture, evoking the celebrated 1864 ride from Winchester that became one of the most enduring heroic images of the American Civil War. The sculptural composition is notable for its dynamic movement and narrative clarity. The horse is shown in energetic forward motion, foreleg lifted and head turned with animation, while Sheridan sits upright in the saddle with sword at his side, his raised arm creating a dramatic vertical accent that energizes the silhouette. The central tree-stump support, cleverly integrated into the landscape base, lends both structural balance and visual symbolism, recalling battlefield terrain and commemorative monument design. The bronze is finished in a rich dark patina that emphasizes the horse’s musculature and the crisp military details of the rider’s uniform, boots, and sidearm. Raised on a polished black marble plinth, the work has strong desk, mantel, or library display presence and would appeal especially to collectors of Civil War memorabilia, military bronzes, and historical Americana.
