Angelo Basso (Italian, 1943–2011), Galatea, Dimensions: 28 H x 12 W x 9 D inches, a dramatic patinated bronze sculpture depicting the mythological sea nymph Galatea in an elegant, upward-reaching pose above a seahorse and turbulent waves. Basso renders the elongated female figure with sweeping arms, flowing hair and billowing drapery, creating a strong sense of movement and weightlessness. The sculpture displays Basso's characteristic combination of highly polished and richly textured surfaces. The figure is finished in a warm golden-brown patina contrasted by silver-toned garments and drapery, dark patination to the flowing hair and seahorse, and blue-green verdigris coloration throughout the sculpted waves and base. Dark blue jewel-like accents embellish the figure's forehead and necklace, further enhancing the fantasy and mythological character of the composition. The work is signed A. Basso in the bronze along the lower base. A substantial and visually striking example of Basso's figurative sculpture, combining classical mythology with the artist's highly stylized contemporary treatment of the human form. Condition: Very Good overall condition. Sculpture presents attractively with strong coloration and contrasting polished and textured surfaces. Minor scattered surface wear, rubbing, oxidation and variations to the patination consistent with age, handling and display. Irregularities within some textured areas appear consistent with the casting and finishing process. No obvious major breaks, repairs or significant losses. Prospective bidders should examine all photographs as part of the condition report.
