Hand-carved and painted wooden female mallard duck decoy by J.C. West of Surf City, New Jersey, dated 1973. The hen is modeled in a classic resting form with inset glass eyes, a warm brown head, orange-and-black bill, richly patterned brown and tan plumage, and a vivid blue wing speculum bordered in white. The body is detailed with extensive hand-painted feather patterning across the breast, flanks, wings, and tail, giving the carving strong decorative and folk-art appeal. The underside is hand-inscribed “Female Mallard by J.C. West, Surf City, N.J., 1973.” Condition shows age-related wear including scattered scratches, rubbing, minor paint loss, and surface abrasions consistent with age and display. Measures 4.25"H x 9"W x 3.75"D.
