Hand-carved and painted wooden male mallard by J.C. West, dated 1974, modeled standing on carved feet atop a round wood slice base. The drake features inset glass eyes, a dark green-black head, warm chestnut breast, yellow bill, finely patterned gray and tan plumage, and a vivid blue wing speculum bordered in white. The carving is especially well detailed through the wings and flanks, with incised and painted feather work giving the bird a naturalistic decorative presentation. The underside retains a handwritten inscription identifying J.C. West as the maker and dating the carving to 1974. Condition shows light age-related wear with scattered scratches, rubbing and minor paint loss, along with expected wear to the wood base and green felt underside. Measures 9.5"H x 11"W x 5.25"D.
