1908-S Indian Head Cent Mint Mark Soft

An Indian Head cent with the date 1908 bold and clear below the bust. A small raised mint mark sits on the reverse under the wreath bow, exactly where an Indian cent mint mark belongs, and its shape is consistent with an S. Here is the reasoning that matters: only two Indian Head cents were ever struck outside Philadelphia, the 1908-S and the 1909-S, so a mark present at all on an 1908 supports the S. Now the cautions. The letter is soft in the photographs and cannot be read with certainty, added S mint marks are a known problem on this key date, and anyone bidding key-date money should plan on certification by PCGS or NGC. The flip is marked VF, graded Very Fine by the consignor. This coin is raw and has not been certified by PCGS or NGC, so the grade reflects the consignor's opinion. All four letters of LIBERTY show, the reverse is sharp, and the color is even medium brown with no damage or corrosion. San Francisco struck only 1,115,000 cents in 1908, its first year coining cents. Estimated Value: $70 to $110. Sold as-is. Photos are the most accurate description of this lot.
