Missouri and Oklahoma Sales Tax Tokens (25)

Sales tax tokens, the small change scrip stores handed out so a shopper could pay the fraction of a cent owed in state tax. About 25 pieces are visible in the only full group photograph, and a few sit stacked two deep, so the exact count cannot be confirmed. Most are red and maroon molded plastic Missouri tokens reading MISSOURI SALES TAX TOKEN around a numeral 1, plus one brown plastic example. Four or five dark zinc Missouri SALES TAX RECEIPT tokens with a center hole and a raised state map are here in 1 and 5 denominations, along with two aluminum Oklahoma CONSUMERS TAX CHECK pieces. The plastic is clean with sharp lettering and light scuffing. At least two zinc tokens carry heavy green-black corrosion and pitting, and on the worst one the map is nearly eaten away. No reverse is photographed. These are not scarce: Missouri struck more than 160 million tokens and demonetized them at the end of 1961. In a Missouri sale the honest appeal is local nostalgia, not rarity. Estimated Value: $6 to $13. Sold as-is. Photos are the most accurate description of this lot.
