1971-1972-D Kennedy Half Dollars (4)

Four copper-nickel clad Kennedy half dollars with the eagle and shield reverse: three dated 1971 and one dated 1972, all four struck at Denver with the D mint mark below the neck truncation. Each has full hair and no wear at the high points, so all four appear uncirculated. One 1971-D carries strong golden-brown toning with a dark streak in the left field. Another has light gold haze and dark specks near the ear. The third 1971-D is the brightest, with clean satin luster. The 1972-D is dull gray with a hazy, slightly greasy looking surface and a shallow strike in the hair above the ear. The reverses, seen only in a group photograph, all show complete eagle and shield detail, with golden-tan toning on two. Here is the history: Kennedy halves were 90 percent silver in 1964 and 40 percent silver from 1965 through 1970. Congress removed the silver in 1970, so 1971 is the first year of the clad half.
