1968-D Kennedy Half 40 Percent Silver Toned

A 1968-D Kennedy half dollar in 40 percent silver clad, struck at the Denver Mint. The D sits on the obverse below the neck truncation and above the date, and it reads clearly in both obverse photographs. The coin shows full detail with no high-point wear, so it appears to grade uncirculated, but the luster is muted and light golden-tan toning covers both sides and gathers at the rims. Disclosed defects: a few small dark specks on the neck and jaw, a scattering of tiny ticks in the fields, light tan toning on the reverse and a small dark fleck below the right wing. No corrosion. Note that 1968 is the year mint marks came back after the 1965 to 1967 blackout, and the Mint moved the letter from the reverse to the obverse, so a 1964 half wears its mark under the eagle while a 1968 wears it under Kennedy neck. The coin holds about 0.1479 troy ounces of pure silver, roughly $9.75 at recent prices near $66 per ounce, and metal prices move, so check spot before you bid. Estimated Value: $10 to $14.
