1964 Kennedy Half Silver Field Scratches

A 1964 Kennedy half dollar in 90 percent silver from Philadelphia. The reverse position below the eagle tail feathers is in focus and empty, so there is no mint mark. The coin is bright white and lustrous with pale gold tone at the rims and shows no high-point wear. The honest problem is in the left obverse field, where several distinct fine hairline scratches run between LIBERTY and the face, with lighter hairlines through the cheek. On a coin this white, surfaces show hairlines consistent with an old cleaning, and PCGS and NGC would return such a coin as details rather than a straight grade. Also disclosed: a few small tan flecks on the jaw and neck and a small tan spot below the right wing on the reverse. A cleaned 90 percent half is still a full silver half, and at these metal levels melt is doing most of the work. The coin holds 0.3617 troy ounces of pure silver, roughly $23.85 at recent prices near $66 per ounce, and metal moves, so check spot before you bid. Estimated Value: $24 to $30. Sold as-is.
