1965 Kennedy Half 40 Percent Silver Bright

A 1965 Kennedy half dollar in 40 percent silver clad, the first year of that composition. There is no mint mark, which is correct, because the Mint omitted mint marks on all coins dated 1965 through 1967. The photographs show a bright silvery white coin with satin luster, a slight tan tone at the rims and full detail with no high-point wear, so it appears to grade uncirculated. Disclosed: light hairlines and small ticks in the fields, a faint dark smudge on the jaw, small specks on the neck, a few tiny flecks on the reverse and a small tan spot left of the shield. No corrosion, no rim damage. The history is the hook. The Coinage Act of 1965 pulled silver out of the dime and the quarter entirely, but Congress kept a reduced 40 percent silver in the half dollar as a compromise, and that lasted through 1970. The coin holds about 0.1479 troy ounces of pure silver, roughly $9.75 at recent prices near $66 per ounce, and metal prices move, so check spot before you bid. Estimated Value: $10 to $14.
