1968-D Kennedy Half 40 Pct Silver Green Specks

A 1968-D Kennedy half dollar in 40 percent silver clad, with the D legible on the obverse below the neck truncation. Detail is full and there is no high-point wear, so it appears to grade uncirculated, but the surfaces are satiny with light gray-gold toning. Defects: dark gray charcoal smudging along the jaw, neck and lower cheek, a tiny red-orange fleck right of the hair, a small dark fleck left of the arrows on the reverse, and small green-tinted specks in the left obverse field near LIBERTY and along the left inner rim that appear in both obverse photographs. Those green specks may be verdigris, which is active corrosion, or a stray fiber or reflection. We report them as seen and cannot confirm which. Worth teaching: 40 percent silver clad is a sandwich, outer layers about 80 percent silver over a core near 21 percent. The coin holds about 0.1479 troy ounces of pure silver, roughly $9.75 at recent prices near $66 per ounce, and metal moves, so check spot before you bid. Estimated Value: $10 to $13. Sold as-is.
