Pair of distinctive vintage bells, highlighted by an unusual Whitechapel Bell Foundry cup-shaped brass bell with an uncommon double-clapper construction. The Whitechapel bell features a turned and deeply grooved cone-shaped wooden handle with polished metal tip. The handle is secured by a rivet through a large loop and substantial leather disc concealed within the bell. Two lead pendant clappers hang independently from large S-hooks attached to smaller eye-hooks passing through the leather disc, producing a particularly pleasing sound. The bell is notably heavy and well constructed. Whitechapel is one of England's most historically significant bell foundries, responsible for bells including the Liberty Bell and Big Ben. Interestingly, Whitechapel also produced musical Cup Bells, although their standard cup bells were designed without internal clappers and struck externally with mallets. That makes the double internal clapper arrangement of this example an especially unusual construction worth noting in the catalog. Also included is a tall vintage brass hand bell with a dark turned wooden handle and an ornate cast bell body featuring raised scrolling, foliate, and fluted decoration. Both pieces display surface wear, patina, tarnish, and other signs of age and use. See photos for details.
