Tibetan Buddhist Ghanta & Asian Arch Bell

Two distinctive Asian metal bells featuring contrasting ceremonial and decorative forms. The smaller 6.5" tall bell is a Tibetan Buddhist ritual bell, or ghanta (drilbu), with a dark gray metal body decorated with contrasting characters and symbolic motifs. Its elaborate handle incorporates a sculpted deity face beneath a multi-pronged half-vajra (dorje) finial. This construction is characteristic of Tibetan Vajrayana ritual bells; the ghanta traditionally symbolizes wisdom and is used together with the vajra, which represents method or compassion. The larger 12" tall decorative bell is suspended within an ornate arching metal stand with an openwork frame and coordinating pedestal base. The dark bell and base feature contrasting inlaid or engraved-style linear, foliate, and character motifs. This appears to be an Asian-inspired decorative table or altar bell rather than a traditional Tibetan ghanta. A striker or clapper is present within the suspended bell.
