Antique "Bevin Bros." Graduated Carriage Bell Set

Antique Bevin Bros. Manufacturing Co. four-bell graduated carriage bell assembly, featuring four metal bells mounted to a heavy black metal bracket. The bells graduate in size from approximately 3" at the largest to 2.25" at the smallest, with an overall bracket length of approximately 13.5". The bells retain their triple clapper configuration, designed to produce a distinctive multi-tone ringing sound as the assembly moves. Bevin Bros. was founded in East Hampton, Connecticut in 1832 and became one of America's best-known bell manufacturers. The company produced bells for sleighs, carriages, wagons and later commercial vehicles. Bevin Bros. also supplied the characteristic bells associated with Good Humor ice cream trucks beginning in the 1920s. This four-bell configuration is particularly interesting because surviving Good Humor-style vendor bell assemblies use a very similar approximately 13" rack fitted with four graduated bells. While this example may have been used on a carriage, cart, or vendor vehicle, its exact original application is unknown. Displays an aged surface with oxidation, finish wear, scratches, discoloration and patina consistent with age and use. A great piece of early American bell manufacturing history and an unusual collectible for Bevin Bros., carriage, transportation, general store, or ice cream vendor memorabilia collectors.
