Small cast-metal Japanese Bonsho-style Buddhist temple bell, measuring approximately 3" tall x 2.75" wide. Modeled after the monumental bronze bells traditionally suspended at Japanese Buddhist temples, this miniature example features a heavily cast body with a dark, weathered patina, raised horizontal bands, panels of traditional raised bosses or studs, and a vertical panel of raised Japanese characters. The pierced ornamental suspension fitting at the crown retains a braided cord. Traditional Japanese bonsho are characteristically decorated with raised bosses, bands and inscriptions and, unlike Western bells, are normally sounded by striking the exterior rather than with an internal clapper. This miniature follows many of those traditional architectural elements, and comparable small Showa-period examples were produced as altar, ceremonial, commemorative and decorative objects. This example does not have an internal clapper, which is consistent with the bonsho form rather than necessarily indicating a missing component. The exact age, foundry, translation of the inscription, and metal composition have not been independently verified, so we would avoid representing it as an antique or solid bronze without additional provenance or testing. Shows substantial aged surface patina, oxidation, discoloration and wear throughout, giving the piece a wonderfully weathered appearance. 3" Tall x 2.75" Wide See photos for details.
