German bisque socket head character doll produced by Theodor Recknagel. The doll features a composition and wood fully jointed body that has been restrung. The head is incised with the size marking 24 and Germany on the reverse. Facial features include blue glass sleep eyes with painted lashes and an open mouth with four inset porcelain upper teeth. The doll retains a brown mohair wig with soft curls. It is dressed in an authentic traditional Scottish Highland costume consisting of a black velvet jacket with a red and black bead pin, a tartan kilt with a matching shoulder sash, and a white fur sporran. Additional attire includes a matching tartan glengarry cap with a black pom-pom, dark knit stockings, and black leather-like lace-up shoes over blue cloth bloomers. The clothing is sewn onto the body. Height: 12 inches. Bisque head is in good condition. The composition body shows expected light surface wear and minor finish loss at the joints consistent with age. One thumb is broken off. The sleep eye mechanism is functional. Clothing shows typical age-related dust and minor fraying to textile edges.
