1880s W.C. SHEPARD CHINA HOUSE NEW ORLEANS TUREEN

AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > Large antique English white ironstone covered soup tureen measuring 15" long by 9" wide and standing 10" tall to the domed cover handle. The underside carries a British Royal Arms style mark reading STONE CHINA ~ WARRANTED ~ ANTHONY SHAW ~ BURSLEM, together with FOR W. C. SHEPARD & CO. ~ N.O. Anthony Shaw manufactured ironstone and other ceramic wares at Burslem in Staffordshire, England. Marks naming Burslem without the later & Son designation date from approximately 1857 to 1882. W. C. Shepard & Co. was a New Orleans retailer and importer operating the American China House on Camp Street. Period advertisements document the firm selling china and dinner services in New Orleans during the 1870s and early 1880s. The retailer specific backstamp indicates that this tureen was manufactured by Anthony Shaw expressly for sale through the New Orleans firm. Dating to the Victorian period, approximately 1860 to 1882, the tureen represents English Staffordshire ironstone made for the prosperous American export trade and specifically marketed through a documented New Orleans china merchant. The broad oval body is raised upon a molded pedestal foot, with open loop handles at each end and a fitted domed cover. The cover is fitted with an arched loop handle and includes a serving ladle opening along one edge. The restrained undecorated form relies upon substantial proportions and smoothly molded contours rather than printed or painted ornament. Large covered tureens of this type formed an important component of coordinated Victorian dinner services and were intended for presenting soup, stew or other substantial dishes at the table. CONDITION REPORT > As discovered, not cleaned or altered. Light discoloration and residue are visible around the underside foot and interior rim. Perhaps typical and minor elements relative to age, handling, materials or manner of production.
