Vintage MIDDLE EASTERN PERSIAN BRASS AFTABA EWER

AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > Substantial antique brass ewer standing 13-1/2" tall to the shoulder, measuring approximately 5-1/2" in diameter across the rounded body and weighing 1-3/4 lbs. The tall vessel presents a pear shaped body raised upon a broad pedestal foot, with a ringed shoulder, cylindrical neck and elongated beak form pouring spout. A slender strap handle extends from the body to the upper neck, terminating in an ornamental open scroll with a raised thumb rest. The separate body, neck, foot, spout and handle elements were joined by traditional soldered construction, with seams and attachment points visible throughout. The form is associated with the Middle Eastern aftaba, also known as an aftabeh, abdasta or ibriq, a water ewer traditionally used with a basin for washing the hands and face or for ritual ablution. Pear shaped bodies, extended spouts and tall handles were produced across Persia, India and neighboring regions for centuries and later adapted into decorative export wares. The traditional hand assembled form, rolled and soldered construction, visible seams, aged repairs, dark oxidation and separately fitted elements suggest an older vessel, potentially dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, approximately 1880 to 1930. Without inscriptions, documented provenance or closely matched construction details, a narrower origin and date cannot be established. The underside is enclosed by a separate metal plate, likely adding weight and stability to the broad foot. No maker, country of origin or other identifying marks were located. CONDITION REPORT > As discovered, not cleaned or polished. Extensive oxidation, spotting, darkened patina, finish variation, surface marks, visible soldering and old repairs occur throughout. The oxidation may be reduced through deliberate and labor intensive polishing, although complete restoration of the finish cannot be assured.
