1800s ANTIQUE FIDDLEBACK COIN SILVER SOUP LADLE

AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > Antique American coin silver soup or serving ladle measuring 13" long, with a deep rounded bowl measuring approximately 4" × 3-1/4" and 1-1/4" deep. The ladle presents a broad downturned fiddle pattern terminal, slender curved stem and distinctive pointed shoulders where the handle joins the bowl. A finely engraved script monogram reading C-R appears upon the topside of the handle. The substantial length and deep bowl were intended for serving soup, stew, punch or similar contents from a large tureen or communal vessel. The broad fiddle terminal, narrow stem, pointed bowl shoulders, engraved script monogram and overall hand finished character support a mid 19th century date, approximately 1830s through 1870s. The fiddle pattern became one of the principal American flatware forms during the early and middle 19th century and appeared extensively in coin silver tableware made before sterling became the prevailing American standard. Coin silver was traditionally fashioned from silver alloys generally approaching the fineness of circulating American coinage, commonly near 90 percent silver, although the precise composition varied among makers and periods. No maker or silversmith marks are present. CONDITION REPORT > As discovered, not cleaned or altered..
