SETH THOMAS Double Wind BRASS MARINE SHIPS CLOCK

AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > Vintage Seth Thomas mechanical marine, ship, engine room or bulkhead clock housed within a substantial circular brass case, measuring 7" in diameter across the hinged glazed bezel and fitted with a 5-1/2" silvered metal dial. The dial is marked SETH THOMAS and MADE IN U.S.A., presenting bold black Arabic numerals, an outer minute chapter, black hands and a subsidiary seconds register beneath 12. A recessed regulator above 12 is marked S and F, allowing adjustment toward slower or faster timekeeping. Two winding apertures serve the double mainspring, time only movement. Unlike an ordinary household clock with separate time and strike trains, both springs supply power to the timekeeping mechanism. This heavy double wind arrangement was used in Seth Thomas Chronometer Lever marine clocks to provide dependable operation and an extended running period in ships, engine rooms and other locations where a pendulum clock would have been impractical. The movement uses a balance wheel escapement rather than a pendulum, allowing the clock to function while mounted vertically and remain less affected by vibration or movement. The circular brass bulkhead case includes a broad rear mounting flange and a hinged front bezel permitting access to the dial, winding arbors and regulator. Seth Thomas began producing clocks in Connecticut during the early 19th century and became one of America’s most prominent clock manufacturers. In addition to household clocks, the company produced robust marine and industrial timepieces for ships, yachts, steam vessels, engine rooms, offices and institutional settings. The reverse retains an older service label from MOBILE CLOCK CO. ~ 567 DAUPHIN ST. ~ ROTARY PARKING ~ DIAL 34859, documenting prior service or retail association in Mobile, Alabama. A modern replacement winding key is included and fits both winding arbors. CONDITION REPORT > The clock began operating immediately when removed from a wall where it had been displayed for many years and continued running for approximately nine hours during observation, with the subsidiary seconds hand operating and the clock maintaining substantially accurate time. Both winding arbors accept the included replacement key but did not turn readily under light pressure; no force was applied. The dial exhibits scratches, discoloration and age related surface wear. The brass case displays tarnish, oxidation, finish variation and scattered marks. As discovered, not cleaned, lubricated or professionally serviced. Movement has not been accessed for inspection.
