LUCILLE PARKER DEPOSIT GUARANTY BANK FLOWER PLATES

AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > Group of four limited edition fine porcelain botanical plates reproducing original watercolors by noted Mississippi artist and educator Lucile Parker, each measuring 9-1/4" in diameter and finished with a narrow gold trim edge. Produced expressly for friends of Deposit Guaranty National Bank, the plates date from 1984, 1985, 1987 and 1988 and represent four entries from a five plate series devoted to native Southern wildflowers. Included subjects: SOUTHERN BIRDS FOOT VIOLET DWARF DANDELION BACHELOR’S BUTTON SOUTHERN DEWBERRY Each composition depicts the complete botanical specimen against white porcelain, including flowers, leaves, stems and exposed root structures. Parker’s name appears within each image as part of the reproduced original watercolor. The restrained white ground, finely observed plant forms and delicate natural coloration preserve the character of botanical studies while allowing the group to function equally well as Mississippi art, decorative porcelain and Southern wildflower illustration. The reverse of each plate carries a descriptive inscription identifying the corresponding position within the limited edition series, Deposit Guaranty National Bank, Lucile Parker as the originating artist, her association with William Carey College and the individual wildflower title and year. The series numbers vary from one through five, although this offering contains four of the five issued designs. Lucile Parker was born in Sumrall, Mississippi, and became particularly recognized for botanical drawings and paintings, landscapes and portraiture. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Southern Mississippi and a graduate degree in art from the University of Alabama, with additional study at the Pietro Venucci Academy of Art in Perugia, Italy. William Carey College awarded Parker an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree in 1981. Parker organized the art department at William Carey and served as department chair from 1974 through 1983. The university’s Lucile Parker Gallery, opened in 1990 and named in her honor, continues to recognize her importance as a Mississippi artist and educator whose work is represented in public and private collections throughout the United States. Deposit Guaranty National Bank was a major Mississippi banking institution headquartered in Jackson. Established in 1925, the bank commissioned this porcelain series as a presentation or promotional gift for clients and friends, combining regional banking history with the work of one of Mississippi’s prominent botanical artists.
