MISSISSIPPI INDIAN ARROWHEAD & POTTERY ARTIFACTS

NO SHIPPING ~ LOCAL PICKUP ONLY > Large mixed assemblage of reportedly excavated artifacts recovered from the Southwest Mississippi area, including a 22" × 28" wood display board and three containers filled with additional loose material. The board retains numerous mounted examples arranged in vertical groupings, including two small chipped stone projectile points or arrowheads, worked and unworked stone fragments, lithic flakes and several pottery sherds displaying incised, cord marked, combed or other impressed surface decoration. Other fragments appear to include plain pottery, fired clay, stone, mineral and possible shell material. The three accompanying containers hold a substantial quantity of unsorted fragments. One is dominated by plain and decorated pottery sherds in varied reddish, buff, grey and brown earthenware tones. Another contains assorted stone and mineral specimens, including worked looking fragments, flakes, quartz rich material and possible shell or fossil pieces. The third contains larger brown stone fragments and naturally rounded examples that have not been individually identified, however some may be related to American Indian tribes common to the area of Southwest Mississippi. The pottery fragments are consistent with material commonly recovered from Indigenous archaeological sites in Mississippi, where broken vessel sherds may preserve information through clay composition, temper, surface treatment and decorative pattern. The chipped stone material may include projectile point fragments, tools, manufacturing debris or naturally fractured stone. No attempt has been made to assign the pieces to a particular Mississippi archaeological culture, tribal community or period. Reportedly recovered in Southwest Mississippi. Offered as an older regional study and display collection, with all identifications remaining subject to specialist review. CONDITION REPORT > Excavated and fragmentary condition throughout, with soil deposits, mineral staining, surface erosion, losses, old adhesive residue and detached areas upon the display board. The loose contents have not been counted, cleaned, sorted or individually identified.
