AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > Vintage gentleman’s vanity hair brush with a shaped sterling silver covered back and short integral handle, fitted with dense black bristles. The side is stamped INTERNATIONAL ~ STERLING beside the International Silver Company maker’s emblem, confirming sterling silver rather than silverplate. The plain, gently contoured back reflects the restrained styling commonly used for men’s dresser and travel accessories. Unlike the more elaborately decorated brushes found in women’s vanity sets, gentleman’s examples were generally compact, substantial and minimally ornamented. The form may also be described as a men’s dresser brush, military style hair brush, toilet set brush, grooming brush or vanity brush. International Silver Company was organized in Meriden, Connecticut, in 1898 through the consolidation of several established American silver manufacturers. The company produced extensive lines of sterling and silverplate hollowware, flatware and personal accessories, including men’s travel and toilet sets containing brushes, mirrors and related grooming articles. The sterling element forms the visible outer shell over the underlying brush structure and should not be interpreted as the entire weight of the object in solid sterling. CONDITION REPORT > The sterling surface displays substantial natural tarnish, scattered marks and shallow dents. The black bristles remain substantially present, with some unevenness and scattered losses. As discovered, not cleaned or altered.
