AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > Group of -3- vintage American made Tootsietoy cast metal automobiles dating to the early 1950s. The larger grey Chrysler sedan and red Buick LeSabre concept convertible each measure approximately 5-1/2" long, while the smaller yellow Chrysler convertible measures 4-1/4" long. Each is marked TOOTSIETOY ~ MADE IN U.S.A. beneath the body. The grey four door sedan is modeled as a circa 1950 Chrysler, with CHRYSLER cast into the trunk lid. Details include the broad postwar body, divided windshield, projecting front fenders, molded grille and bumper, open window apertures and black metal wheels. The red and silver open automobile represents the futuristic Buick LeSabre concept car, created under General Motors design chief Harley Earl and introduced in 1951. The original full size LeSabre was among the most influential American dream cars of the period, incorporating aircraft inspired styling, a low wraparound windshield, central hood feature, prominent tail fins and a dramatically elongated body. Tootsietoy reproduced the design as a substantial 5-1/2" cast metal model, preserving the open cockpit, wire windshield frame, raised rear fins and distinctive turbine age profile. Online examples are commonly identified as the Tootsietoy Buick LeSabre convertible of 1951 or 1952. The smaller yellow open car is a Tootsietoy Chrysler convertible, generally identified as a circa 1950 Chrysler Windsor. The model has an open passenger compartment, molded seats and steering wheel, divided windshield, rounded postwar fenders and black metal wheels. Period examples of this 4" to 4-1/4" Chrysler convertible are documented in yellow. Tootsietoy was produced by the Dowst Manufacturing Company of Chicago, one of the pioneering American manufacturers of die cast miniature vehicles. The company’s origins extend to the late 19th century, with the Tootsietoy trademark registered in 1924. Its automobiles were generally made with a one piece zinc alloy body, two axles and four wheels, creating durable toys sold through department stores and five and dime retailers. CONDITION REPORT > All three retain extensive play wear with broad paint loss, chips, abrasions, scratches, oxidation and exposed metal. The Buick LeSabre displays especially extensive loss to the original red finish, with a later or exposed silver colored surface dominating the body. Offered as discovered, not cleaned or altered.
