AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > Collection of original components from a 1954 Parker Brothers Monopoly Popular Edition, including the green equipment box, fitted compartment tray, eight classic metal player tokens, two dice, wooden houses and hotels, Title Deed cards with black and white mortgage backs, Chance and Community Chest cards, play money and printed instructions. The individual cards, money, houses and hotels have not been counted, and the folding gameboard is not present. The green box carries the familiar midcentury MONOPOLY POPULAR EDITION graphics and identifies Parker Brothers Inc. of Salem, Massachusetts, New York, San Francisco and Chicago. This enlarged green Popular Edition box was introduced in 1954 as Parker Brothers revised the packaging and printed rules. The accompanying instruction sheet carries the accumulated copyright dates 1935, 1936, 1951 and 1954, supporting the 1954 production date. The Popular Edition was traditionally identified as Parker Brothers’ No. 8 set. Included metal player tokens: RACECAR TOP HAT IRON SCOTTIE DOG THIMBLE SHOE OR BOOT BATTLESHIP CANNON These eight miniature cast metal tokens represent part of the classic Monopoly playing piece group established during the early decades of the game. The fanciful tokens allowed each player to select a recognizable personal marker and included familiar household articles, transportation forms and military subjects. Although ten different tokens were available during this period, many boxed editions were supplied with eight. The surviving Title Deed cards retain colored property bands to the faces and plain black and white mortgage sides to the reverse. When a property was mortgaged during play, the card was turned over so the bold property name, mortgage value and instruction CARD MUST BE TURNED THIS SIDE UP IF PROPERTY IS MORTGAGED remained visible. Also included are the illustrated orange Chance cards, yellow Community Chest cards, period Monopoly money and both the standard rules and separate RULES FOR A SHORT GAME OF MONOPOLY, advertised as providing sixty to ninety minutes of play. The red hotels and green houses are formed from painted wood rather than later plastic. They remain arranged within the original divided box tray along with the cards and currency. The wooden buildings, metal tokens and loose paper components were protected within the equipment box and often survived storage better than the gameboard. During this era, the Popular Edition was sold as a two part set, with the small green box holding the playing equipment while the large folding gameboard was a separate piece rather than fitting inside the box. The board was repeatedly unfolded across a table, handled along the edges and folded again after play. Its paper playing surface, cloth hinge and board corners were therefore particularly vulnerable to separation, splitting, staining and general deterioration.
