ANTIQUE GLOW NIGHT LAMP No. 0625 KEROSENE LAMP

AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > Antique Glow Night Lamp No. 0625 miniature kerosene night lamp, standing approximately 6-1/4" tall when assembled. Molded beneath the clear glass font: GLOW NIGHT LAMP ~ No. 0625 ~ MADE IN U.S.A. ~ PAT. 5.5.08. Patented May 5, 1908, the lamp is associated with the Glow Lamp Company of Boston, Massachusetts. It was produced during the early 20th century transition from kerosene illumination to electric lighting, when compact oil lamps remained useful in homes without electrical service and as dependable supplemental lighting where electricity was unavailable, limited or unreliable. The design combines a clear pressed glass fuel font, small metal burner assembly and removable opaque white glass shade. Both glass sections are molded with corresponding vertical ribs, creating a unified appearance. The clear lower font rests upon a circular foot, while the rounded white shade seats directly into the metal gallery above the burner. Kerosene held within the lower font was drawn upward through the wick by capillary action. The burner control regulated the exposed portion of the wick and therefore the size of the flame. When lighted, the opaque ribbed shade softened and diffused the illumination, producing a subdued glow rather than the brighter direct light of a conventional table lamp. The small font and modest flame made the lamp economical for extended nighttime use. It was particularly suited for bedrooms, nurseries, sickrooms, hallways and similar settings where enough light was needed for observation or movement without fully illuminating the room. The form is referenced by collectors and in period material as a Glow Night Lamp, Glow Thrift Lamp, McFaddin Glow Lamp, miniature kerosene lamp, nursery lamp and sickroom lamp. CONDITION REPORT > As discovered, not cleaned or altered. The lower fitter opening of the white glass shade exhibits several chips and edge losses, as photographed. The metal burner assembly displays oxidation, darkening and accumulated residue.
