AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > Diminutive Auburn intramural track and field award medal measuring approximately 1" × 3/4" overall, exclusive of the movable suspension ring. Cast in metal with a darkened nickel silver colored plated surface, the medal was likely originally suspended from a ribbon, chain or award bar. The architectural frame is modeled with fluted columns and a rounded pediment bearing raised INTRAMURAL lettering. At center, a track athlete is shown crouched in the starting position, while the rectangular base is prominently lettered AUBURN. The unmarked reverse retains a textured cast surface. Intramural sports are organized athletic competitions conducted within a school or university community rather than between institutions. Students compete against fellow students through residence halls, fraternities, clubs, departments or independently formed teams. Such programs broadened participation beyond varsity athletes and offered organized recreation, exercise, campus fellowship and competitive awards in sports including track and field. The medal relates to Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama, founded in 1856 as the East Alabama Male College. The institution became the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama in 1872, the Alabama Polytechnic Institute in 1899 and Auburn University in 1960. Its long athletic tradition extends beyond intercollegiate varsity competition to organized student recreation and intramural programs. Auburn continues to maintain a substantial intramural sports program, illustrating the lasting campus tradition represented by this small award medal.
