CAT Finial ENGLISH BRASS FIREPLACE TOASTING FORK

AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > A vintage cast brass fireplace toasting fork measuring 18" long and weighing 8 oz. The long, slender shaft is fitted at the handle end with a highly detailed seated cat resting upon a textured ground, complete with modeled fur, facial features and a large suspension ring above the head. The opposite end terminates in an openwork three-tine fork with scrolling foliate decoration. The three pointed tines were intended to pierce bread, cheese, fruit or similar food and hold it safely before an open hearth fire. The ring above the figural handle allowed the utensil to be hung near the fireplace when not in use. Long-handled toasting forks were traditional hearth utensils used for cooking directly before an open fire. Brass examples with elaborate figural handles became decorative fireside accessories as well as functional implements, particularly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The detailed cat finial and ornamental pierced fork distinguish this example from more plainly formed household versions. The brass retains a dark aged surface with brighter golden highlights across raised portions of the cat and ornamental fork, emphasizing the cast details.
