AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > A genuine vintage South Central Bell Telephone Company underground cable warning sign measuring approximately 12" wide by 18" tall, produced from heavy aluminum with rounded corners and six mounting holes. The yellow and black sign reads WARNING ~ UNDERGROUND CABLE ~ BEFORE DIGGING IN THIS VICINITY PLEASE CALL (COLLECT) OR NOTIFY ~ REPAIR SERVICE ~ SOUTH CENTRAL BELL TELEPHONE CO. A Bell System emblem appears between the words REPAIR and SERVICE. South Central Bell was created in 1968 to serve Alabama, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. The company became part of BellSouth following the 1984 breakup of the Bell System and was merged with Southern Bell into BellSouth Telecommunications in 1992. The South Central Bell name continued in use until the mid 1990s, placing this sign within that historical operating period. Signs of this type were installed near buried telephone lines to warn contractors, utility crews, and property owners against excavation before contacting the telephone company. The instruction to call collect and notify repair service reflects the period before centralized nationwide utility location systems became standard. The heavy aluminum construction, bold safety colors, original mounting holes, Bell emblem, and visible outdoor wear give the sign strong appeal for Bell System, telephone, utility, industrial, advertising, and transportation sign collections.
