NO SHIPPING ~ LOCAL PICKUP ONLY > A vintage Cedar Master freestanding cedar wardrobe measuring approximately 65 1/2" tall to the shaped crown, 30" wide, and 20 1/2" deep, with double doors, interior hanging space, and a deep lower storage compartment. Likely produced during the 1940s or 1950s, the wardrobe reflects the practical freestanding cedar storage furniture marketed during the mid 20th century for homes lacking adequate built in closets. The inside of one door is embossed GENUINE CEDAR-MASTER ~ CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO., U.S.A., while the back of the cabinet is stenciled with the number 360. Published examples identify these cabinets as Cedar Master Safeway Clothes Storage wardrobes. The tall cabinet is constructed from aromatic cedar in contrasting narrow vertical boards, displaying varied reddish brown, amber, and pale sapwood tones with natural knots and figured grain. A shaped crown rises above the case, while the lower section features a broad enclosed compartment with a scalloped apron cutout along the base. The double doors open outward to reveal a full height cedar lined interior with a metal clothes rod and interior door supports. The enclosed lower compartment provides additional storage for blankets, linens, seasonal clothing, shoes, or accessories. Freestanding cedar wardrobes were marketed as practical clothing storage for houses lacking sufficient built in closets. Aromatic cedar was especially favored for wardrobes and chests because the distinctive fragrance and natural oils were traditionally valued for discouraging moths and other fabric pests. The cabinet combines the function of an armoire, wardrobe, linen press, and cedar closet in a movable furniture form. A substantial period storage piece suited for clothing, quilts, blankets, linens, costumes, seasonal textiles, or use as an architectural cedar cabinet within farmhouse, rustic, lodge, cottage, or country interiors.
