DANGER - CONNECTICUT LIGHT & POWER PORCELAIN SIGN

AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > A genuine early Connecticut Light and Power Company high voltage warning sign measuring approximately 20" wide by 10" tall and weighing a substantial 3 pounds, produced in red and white porcelain enamel over heavy sheet metal. The lower right corner bears the diminutive maker’s mark SHANK SIGN CO. ~ N.Y. Shank Sign Company is documented as a New York manufacturer of hard fired porcelain enamel signs during the 1920s and 1930s, supporting an early 20th century date for this example. Other surviving Shank signs employ the same durable enamel over iron construction. The face reads DANGER ~ HIGH VOLTAGE ~ THE CONNECTICUT LIGHT AND POWER CO. in large white block lettering against a red ground. Four reinforced mounting holes remain positioned at the corners for attachment to a fence, gate, generating station, substation, or other restricted electrical installation. The Connecticut Light and Power Company began operating under that name in 1917 and became one of Connecticut’s principal electric utilities. The company joined Hartford Electric Light and Western Massachusetts Electric in forming Northeast Utilities in 1966, placing this sign within the earlier independent CL&P period. Unlike lighter painted aluminum safety signs, this example was manufactured by fusing vitreous enamel to heavy metal at high temperature, creating a hard, glossy, weather resistant surface intended for prolonged industrial use. The substantial weight, original corner grommets, Shank maker’s mark, and honest enamel losses give the sign strong appeal for porcelain sign, electrical utility, industrial, occupational safety, and Connecticut history collections. CONDITION REPORT > Displays authentic outdoor and industrial wear, including scattered chips and losses to the porcelain enamel, exposed dark metal at several impact points, edge wear, scratches, staining, and oxidation around the mounting holes and damaged areas.
