AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > A vintage Cape Guild hand hooked American eagle rug measuring approximately 45" wide by 35" tall, with a bound rectangular edge and patriotic E PLURIBUS UNUM banner. The design depicts a spread wing eagle above leafy branches, with talons gripping the flowing banner. Warm faded shades of rose, burgundy, brown, green, black, and cream give the rug a distinctly aged folk art appearance, while the narrow double line border frames the central image. Produced during the 1940s, Cape Guild examples were decorative rugs rather than unique household folk art creations, though the hand hooked construction and period patriotic imagery remain highly collectible. The eagle and E PLURIBUS UNUM, meaning “Out of many, one,” derive from the Great Seal of the United States and became enduring symbols of national unity. The phrase is often associated with United States coins. Patriotic eagle designs enjoyed renewed popularity during the Colonial Revival and World War II era, appearing on rugs, textiles, ceramics, and other household furnishings. The rug may be displayed on the floor or presented as a large textile wall hanging, particularly within Americana, folk art, Colonial Revival, lodge, country, or patriotic interiors.
