The dust jacket describes the volume as presenting outstanding, authoritative articles on furniture, ceramics, glass, silver, pewter, and other collecting interests, illustrated with photographs of more than 200 items. The inner jacket states that the book includes 96 pages of illustrations comprising more than 200 photographic reproductions. The 35 chapters originally appeared as articles in The Magazine Antiques. Each article was reviewed in light of the knowledge available when this collected edition was prepared, with revisions, clarifications, or extensions added where considered necessary. Alice Winchester also supplied a prefatory note for every chapter. Subjects include Staffordshire pottery, Lowestoft, early American pottery and porcelain, Meissen, jasperware, Windsor chairs, Shaker furniture, major American cabinetmakers, Zanesville and pattern glass, early American glass, American silver, Old Sheffield Plate, pewter, historic firearms, heirloom quilts, and other specialized collecting fields.
