FOSTORIA GLASS FLAME PLUME CRYSTAL MANTLE LUSTRES

AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > A matching pair of vintage Fostoria No. 2484 clear crystal mantle lustre candlesticks, each standing approximately 7 1/2" tall with a 4 1/4" diameter circular base. Fostoria produced the sculptural No. 2484 form during the 1930s and 1940s. The sweeping flame or feather inspired stem, broad bobeche, and suspended prisms combine practical candle lighting with the decorative brilliance historically associated with mantle lustres. Each candlestick features the molded Flame or Plume stem, rising from a spreading foot to a broad circular bobeche with a central socket for a standard taper candle. Eight faceted crystal prisms suspend from metal hooks around each bobeche, designed to catch and scatter candlelight. The Fostoria Glass Company began production in Fostoria, Ohio, in 1887, moving to Moundsville, West Virginia, in 1891 after the local natural gas supply proved short lived. Fostoria developed into one of the best known American makers of fine pressed and blown glass tableware, stemware, decorative glass, and lighting accessories. Mantle lustres evolved from decorative candlesticks fitted with hanging prisms, especially popular during the Victorian era. Traditionally displayed in matching pairs on a fireplace mantel, sideboard, or table, the prisms reflected and multiplied candlelight while adding movement and sparkle to an interior. Later examples, including this Fostoria pair, carried the form into the Art Deco period with cleaner molded lines and stylized natural motifs.
