AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > A pair of vintage oval portrait frames, each measuring approximately 6 1/2" wide by 8 1/2" tall overall, with one retaining a profile silhouette of a young man and the companion frame lacking the original image. Each black enameled wood frame measures approximately 1" wide, accented by a narrow gold gilt inner surround and fitted with glass. The surviving portrait presents a solid black left facing profile against a pale ground with concentric border lines and a small script signature at the lower right. The reverse of one frame retains a label reading CUSTOM FRAMING ~ by ~ CUMBO’S ARTS & CRAFTS ~ WOODVILLE, MISS. ~ Date: 3-24-69 ~ ARTS & CRAFTS SUPPLIES. The companion frame retains a partial matching label, together with period handwritten notations to the cardboard backings. Both are fitted with wire hangers. Profile silhouettes became especially popular during the late 18th and early 19th centuries as a quick and affordable alternative to painted portraiture, allowing families to preserve recognizable likenesses without commissioning a costly oil painting. Their compact scale also made the portraits easy to exchange or send to relatives. Photography gradually displaced silhouettes as an everyday form of portraiture, though the distinctive black profile remained familiar through later decorative revivals. These frames date to the 1969 Colonial and traditional decorating revival, when oval frames, gilt accents, family profiles, and other early American inspired accessories again became popular for domestic interiors. Offered together for display, restoration, or reuse of the vacant companion frame.
